Sesame oil is derived from the seeds of the flowering sesame plant, also known as Sesamumindicum. These plants are native to East Africa and India, but they’re currently grown in many countries around the world.
Due to its hearty, nutty flavor and its high levels of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, sesame oil has become one of the most popular oils for cooking.
Sesame oil is thus one of the oldest extracted oils in the history of human civilization and called as Queen of edible oils.
Sesame oil has got many powerful therapeutic and medicinal properties. The source of these properties is often taken from ancient medicinal texts, like Charaka Samhita, Susruta Samhita and Ebers Papyrus (famous ancient papyrus scrolls from Ancient Egyptian civilization).
Besides being used as a cooking oil in South India, it is often used as a flavour enhancer in Korea, China, Japan, Middle East, and South-East Asia cuisine.
